School Cross Country

School Cross Country

Wednesday was a fantastic day for Av School Cross Country.  It was great to see so many parents and supporters there on the day and great to see all of the training group getting into the racing.

The new course went down well.  Its a better course for running with fewer corners – though the hill seemed to surprise a few – especially on the third lap.  And it is very easy for the spectators.

Our training group did fantastically, including:

  • 5 first places
  • 11 top three finishers
  • 19 in the team for Zone.

More importantly, without exception, I saw all of the group enjoying themselves on the day.  Our objective at the start of the year is for all of the group to enjoy themselves on the day.  I saw the lessons put into practice with good even paced running and fast finishes.  And lots of smiles.

Well done to the whole group.

Commonwealth Games Update

The Commonwealth Games got underway this week and the Athletics program gets going with the 20km Walks on Sunday.  There is so much to look forward to, most immediately the 5,000m on Sunday afternoon.

Here is a short video to get you into the mood for Track and Field.

The Mens Shot put takes place on Monday.  New Zealand shot putter Tom Walsh is really putting some big throws out at the moment.  He tweeted the slow-mo video below which I thought was great.  To put this in perspective, the shot weighs 7.26kg and this throw went out 22.67m.  That is the same weight as a typical bowling ball or seven litres of water.  Try it for your self!
